Andre Construction was contracted to construct a new cold storage facility at a power generating station. The station’s existing storage structure was at the end of its life and no longer met operational needs. The upgraded building was designed to provide secure storage for critical chilling equipment.
The project included the construction of an 85’ x 60’ pre-engineered metal building, complete with a new concrete slab, underground site services, and electrical infrastructure. As lead contractor, the Andre Construction team was responsible for all carpentry, cutting and patching excavation, and concrete work.They oversaw various subcontractors for electrical and paving.
Because the project started in early winter, the team had to expedite concrete pouring.
Construction of the cold storage facility was conducted in the coldest months of the year, making many tasks more difficult than normal.
When digging for the new electrical run, the team accidentally hit an existing fibre optic cable. Work paused while the cable was repaired.
Andre Construction accelerated the pouring schedule to avoid curing in the coldest winter months and ensure the concrete set at full strength.
The team also maintained early and frequent communication with the owners and engineers to ensure smooth operations throughout the project.
The new cold storage building was completed in February 2021, just one month later than planned. The upgraded facility will meet the station’s cold storage needs and support efficiency for the foreseeable future.
The project was completed without any safety incidents and all deliverables met quality and workmanship expectations. Construction of the new cold storage facility demonstrated the team’s ability to deliver an exceptional finished product, even in challenging weather conditions.
